International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day is celebrated on June 28. The date became a watershed after the Stonewall riots in 1969.
That year many commercial establishments frequented by gays and lesbians in the United States had been targeted and raided by the police. On the night of June 28, after a raid, the Stonewall Inn was destroyed by angry patrons and a mob protesting police harassment. The police tried to suppress the gathering, but this just generated more protests. 🚩
From this episode, the fight for LGBT rights gained support and visibility, and one year after the uprising, the first LGBT pride marches were held in the country. 🌈
